The EU waste management industry is governed by legislative and regulatory drivers that are currently emphasising a shift away from landfill towards other treatment options including recycling, materials recovery and other integrated waste management solutions. Across
Europe, the market is at varied stages of development and opportunities in non-hazardous industrial waste management services are diverse. Rising waste volumes and growing legislative pressure have necessitated a steady investment in the industrial waste management industry, although typically this has been traditionally less of a focus when compared to the hazardous and municipal waste markets.
For the purposes of this study, industrial and commercial waste comprises waste generated in offices, manufacturing industry (production and warehousing), energy production and distribution as well as all types of retail outlets. This category excludes hazardous waste, construction and demolition waste, municipally collected waste (i.e. any commercial or industrial waste that is collected as MSW), clinical/medical waste, liquid waste and sewage sludge.
